The hole which suddenly opened up in Royal Road a few days ago turns out to have been a swallow hole!
This described as follows by county officials:
‘We get a number if these throughout the County each year, usually the cause is a very localised natural dissolving of a deeper layer of ground below the road construction layers. Therefore the rest of the road should be fine.’
Which is very nearly – but not quite – reassuring!
