St Albans comes into bloom

Flowers have been planted in newly installed flower towers, planters and lamp post boxes across St Albans as part of St Albans City and District Council’s project to make the District bloom.

Local businesses and other organisations have been invited to get involved with the Council’s District in Bloom project by sponsoring flower baskets or planters within the City centre. As the project develops, it is hoped that they will commit to making the City bloom on an annual basis. If you would like further information about how to sponsor a planter please e-mail: Nikolas.Khan@stalbans.gov.uk or telephone: 01727 819369.

The flower displays have been placed at strategic points around the City, including St Peter’s Street, Holywell Hill, Victoria Street and the areas around the Civic Centre, St Albans Cathedral and St Albans railway station. This will mean that visitors arriving by train will greeted with a colourful flower display that will continue along routes to the City centre and lead to key attractions, such as the cathedral, Verulamium Park, the shopping area and the Alban Arena.

Flowers are also being used for displays on roundabouts located at entry points to the City and the Parishes. The aim is to project a consistent and colourful identity for the District in the summer period, in particular during the St Albans Festival.

Cllr Sheila Burton, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Heritage at St Albans City and District Council, said: “Making St Albans a greener and more pleasant place to live is a key part of the Council’s District in Bloom project. The Council is appealing to local businesses and other organisations to get involved with this long-term project which delivers benefits for the community and the commercial sector. By sponsoring a flower basket or planter, either now or in future years, they will not only help to make the city more attractive for residents, but also increase its appeal as a destination for day-trippers and tourists, many of whom will spend money in the local shops and restaurants.”
