Provision of youth activities and facilities to be scrutinised

The provision of youth activities and facilities across the District is to be analysed by St Albans City and District’s Local Services Scrutiny Committee on 30 October.

A presentation on youth provision in the District will be given by the Youth Action Group, which brings together youth organisations across the District, and youth councillors.

In February, the Committee heard that the Youth Action Group was planning to set up a youth café and a youth forum for young people to discuss issues.

It invited the Youth Action Group to report back in October on progress with these and other key projects and the development of a programme of activities for young people.

The Youth Action Group, which was set up by the St Albans and District Strategic Partnership in 2010, aims to share resources and develop joint activities.

Councillor Robert Donald, Chair of the Local Services Scrutiny Committee, said: “Members of our Committee were very impressed with the representatives of the local Youth Councils who attended our meeting earlier this year and the ideas they had to improve facilities and services for young people locally. We are keen to hear what progress has been made since then in turning these good ideas into practice especially the youth café and forum.

“We hope to hear what actual youth activities and new initiatives have started or are now being planned around the District. We are anxious to see that real improvements are made locally in youth provision and activities. It is important that young people have safe places to socialise together and that they have access to facilities that meet their real needs today. We need to continue to do what we can as a Council to help provide them with positive, healthy things to do especially for the minority who cause problems on the street.”
